Crumpler "Industry Disgrace" Camera Strap

If you're like me, one of those "must have" things you lug around is a DSLR. Sure, they're bulky and don't exactly fit with the "go light" all-day hike, but it takes a rather killer hike before I'll ditch the DSLR for pocketable point n' shoot.

I just bought one of these straps for my 5D Mark II. It's wider and definitely not demure, but having a DSLR and zoom lens hanging on your neck with this strap is much more comfortable. I've used Crumpler products for years since I first came across the edgy Australian start up at a Macworld here in SF many years ago and have been a happy owner of many of their messenger bags, backpacks, and camera bags.

The National Parks: America's Best Idea [Blu-ray] - $71.99

Ken Burns' The National Parks: America's Best Idea is 12 hours of fascinating history about the men and women who created the national park system and how we almost lost one of our most valuable resources.

This little antidote always amuses me:

A young Teddy Roosevelt read in his local New York paper that buffalo were becoming more scarce in the American west. Wasting no time, he hopped on a train for Yellowstone. Upon arriving he spent several weeks looking for the majestic beast. He finally found one -- a lone bull -- weathering the snow in a clearing. So he promptly shot it, took it home, and mounted it on his wall.

Ironic that many years later, as President, he became one of the most important figures in creating what we now call the national parks, realizing that the truly beautiful places needed preserving, not only for their uniqueness but as protective haven for wildlife.

MSR Deluxe Dromedary Bag

MSR Deluxe Dromedary Bag - $29.95 ~ $35.95
Expired Monday, November 30, 2009

Whether you're staying put at camp or hiking in the great outdoors, you need to stay hydrated. As an alternative to water jugs or bottles, I've been using this MSR dromedary water bag. The advantages are it packs small, weighs almost nothing and is very tough. The webbing makes it easy to hang it from a branch and with no predetermined shape it's also very comfortable to carry. Mine is almost 4 years old by now and it still looks and works great!

  • Available in several capacities from 2L to 6L
  • Tough, compact and light weight construction
  • 3-in-1 water cap

If you need something specifically for staying hydrated on the move, checkout the Dromedary's cousin,

On sale for $27.99 - $31.39, depending on bag size.

Exped SynMat 9 Pump DLX Sleeping Pad

Exped SYNMAT 9 DLX w/FREE shipping!

I like this mat. It's sturdy and features a unique built-in hand pump. No blowing into a flimsy tube! Insulated so you don't get that "cold mat" feel and while I wouldn't carry it into the background for an overnighter, it compacts fine for even the smallest trunk.

It's $120 over at altrec and orders over $45 ship free!

Four Person, 3-season Tent - $79.96

Four Person, 3-season Tent - $79.96
Expired Saturday, October 31, 2009

If you're looking for something affordable, this Alps Mountaineering Tent from Sierra Trading Post can't be beat.

I have one and used it last month in Yellowstone and Glacier. Really! That's it right here at the Grant campground in Yellowstone. Unfortunately, I paid $104 for it, but you can have it for $79.96.

Can't speak to it's longevity, but it seemed sturdy enough to last me through quite a few trips. Sets up in minutes and plenty roomy inside.

Don't miss out on additional savings if you spend a bit more. Use coupon code ALOCTOBER9:

  • 15% off $100-$149.99
  • 20% off $150 or more (that'd make the tent $63.97!)

Black Diamond Apollo Lantern - $49.95
Expired Saturday, November 14, 2009

I've used this lamp on a camping trip to Yellowstone a few weeks ago and it's great! Small and light weight, it's roughly the size of a can of soda in it's colapsed form. For it's compact size, it was bright enough to light up a picnic table or the whole tent when hung from the ceiling by it's D-ring. While not as powerful as a gas burning lamp, not having to deal with smelly fuel or hot glass made it a real pleasure to use. The LED wouln't burn out, just 4 AA batteries and the lamp is always ready for use.
